Salem Ferry There, Train Back

Hi and thanks for reading.

Planning a Boston area trip and have one day where we%26#39;re at Crane Beach in Ipswich, then into Boston for the rest of the evening. I%26#39;m looking forward to being near water (not much in Arizona) and had wanted to take the ferry into Boston. However, we%26#39;d like to stay Downtown a little later than the 9pm last ferry, so I was looking at taking the last train back instead. However, the problem is: where to park?

First off: is it realistic to walk between the train station and the ferry terminal? It seems more logical to park the car at the train station since we%26#39;d be getting back pretty late. Neither of us are adverse to walking the mile or so, but I wanted to make sure we wouldn%26#39;t be walking into a demilitarized zone.

Second: is it realistic to think that we could find a space at the Salem train station at around 4pm?

I should mention that we%26#39;re staying in Woburn and will be doing stuff Downtown that night. Any other better suggestions would also appreciated.

thanks in advance,

Colin

I think your plan to park at the train station and walk to the ferry is a good one. You will not run into any problems (e.g. questionable neighborhoods) on your walk. It will be thru the downtown area over to Pickering Wharf area to the ferry. These areas are busy with local folks and tourists. Also, I don%26#39;t think you will have a problem finding parking around 4pm.

Hi Colin: The most direct answer I can give you about train station parking is: it just depends. Day of the week may have some bearing; however, I would think that the car park would start to thin out that time of the day, so chances ARE good. The walk from the ferry to the train station isn%26#39;t that far, maybe a mile or so and NOT through any ';demilitarised'; zones- we really don%26#39;t have any such, to speak of, and certainly not between those two spots.

If I%26#39;m reading your plan correctly, are you driving to Crane Beach, then to Salem for the ferry into Boston, train back to Salem and drive back to Woburn? If so, the easiest thing to do is park at a meter wherever you want (maybe midway between ferry and train) as meters aren%26#39;t enforced after 5PM and you could put in one quarter (for one hour) at 4PM and not have to worry about a ticket. Hope that helps!
