Beach House?

hi

We are hoping to go to Cape cod, from England, and are looking for a quiet beach break where we can do our own thing.

Any recommendations for peaceful accomodation on the beach for 14 days? Which are the best parts of cape cod for this? How peaceful is it in early July?

A clapboard type of beach house or apartment would be lovely, and we don%26#39;t want to hire a car.

We are happy with sun and sand and will eat out mainly.

we are in our forties(on average!)

Also,at the moment we are thinking of booking a Friday flight, will this fit in with changeover days?

Beach House?

Arriving on Cape Cod and staying a couple of weeks with no car is not a good idea. You might be able to get around the outer cape on public transportation (the Flex bus will actually go off its scheduled route to pick you up) but I would think that after one week you will be ready to see things beyond the towns from Harwich to Provincetown. Have you made your arrangements for a rental? July is not generally a peaceful time on Cape Cod....your best chance of a peaceful place will be on the outer cape where the National Seashore is. Here are a few links to look at for transportation and lodging. I would highly recommend renting a car for at least one of your two weeks.

As for changeover..if you stay Friday night in Boston or on Cape Cod in a motel, then you could rent a house from Saturday-Saturday which is the usual weekly rental. But before you make your flight arrangements, you should pin down your lodging.

Beach House?

I think that without a car you will find the Cape a frustrating experience, especially if you need to get to restaurants as well as to the beach. That said, if you are willing to stay put in one town it may be possible to get around with some effort. We have been staying in Orleans for almost 40 years. Lots of restaurants, some shopping, beautiful beach on the ocean side, Nauset, and Skaket on the Bay. In addition to the websites Yellowbird gave you, you could try wilkinsonre.com a local realtor in Orleans who we have rented from in the past.

The summer up here is a zoo. There%26#39;s no peace...really. It%26#39;s gorgeous, but it%26#39;s only peaceful if you can head out to deep water on your own boat and just FISH!

If your schedule is flexible at all, consider visiting the first two weeks of September. Prices will drop a bit but everything%26#39;s still open, the weather is grand and the water is still warm enough to take a plunge. It%26#39;s the best time of the year to be here.

You%26#39;ll definitely need a car, public transport here is the pits; it%26#39;s a good idea to stay mid-cape, Orleans is fine. Check out Chatham as well and the National Seashore in Eastham is not to be missed. If you have a car you can stay basically anywhere you can afford and drive to visit and explore the whole Cape. It%26#39;s a small place and easily accessed by car (especially when the crowds have mostly left and route 6 is not the highway from he(( any longer).

If you decide to use a reputable Realtor (Estate Agent) rather than rent from strangers on the net or from this forum, here%26#39;s a short list to get you started:

Hi Marie, Just to let you know, the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce considers places like Eastham to be the Outer Cape. Mid Cape would be Dennis and that area. Hope you have had a chance to look at a map by now.

Take a look at vanmommy%26#39;s trip report. Their family had cottages in a beach area cottage community in Dennisport. The beach there on warm Nantucket Sound is lovely and peaceful. That area is within easy walking distance to two fine restaurants and a bit further walk to several more. If you locate in Dennisport I%26#39;ll be glad to give you a list of restaurants to try. You would be able to pick up groceries nearby even as long as you rent some bikes with baskets to bring back whatever you gather. Then, of course, you can use the public transportation though you%26#39;ll need to plan ahead a bit.

I%26#39;ll send you a private message also with a suggestion for a good guide book that I think you may enjoy.

Oh, btw, from our experience, the week starting July 5 really seems to be a little more quiet than the week before or after at least in Dennisport and that sounds like it is one of your weeks.

The week of July 5th is PACKED! I cannot believe cc would give such inaccurate information to you! Yikes!

Chatham is always packed both on the streets and on the sidewalks just as reported above. IF you are looking for something different then just avoid it.

I am speaking only from personal experience in Dennisport. You see Dennis is a town that has lots of different things to do so visitors are not all trying to fit onto Main St. Especially if you locate on the beach in Dennisport you will be able to walk and ride bikes along Old Wharf and Lower Country Roads and not have to get into the Rt. 28 traffic. Even though I have a car I like to play the game of seeing just how many days I can string in a row of enjoying dining and activities south of 28.

Silly. %26#39;Tis the season: the Entire Cape is filled from the low tide mark with people. Gorgeous, but it%26#39;s a short season up here....LOTS of folks enjoying the best of the Cape (which of course would Include Chatham!).

If I were you, I would look at next year and try June. Many people book the same cottage for the following year where they stay this year. That is my favorite time here. A car is a must. I think the lower Cape has the best beaches, but no transportation that I would ever use.

Check out www.weneedavacation.com and do a ';power search'; with your requirements. You may find something suitable. Good luck!
