visit nantucket or martha's vineyard

We will have only one day in either nantucket or martha%26#39;s vineyard in Sept 08.

Which would you choose.

Two middle age couples - no hiking, snorkeling, just walking and looking, antiquing, eating etc.

Thanks, Lowcountry native

Hands down...Nantucket is better.... But I%26#39;m prejudice.

Nantucket is beautiful but I think your best bet is Martha%26#39;s Vineyard. There are more villages to visit and they are all different from each other...that%26#39;s my one and only reason since you say you like to walk and look and browse, etc. Martha%26#39;s Vineyard has several villages to browse. Edgartown, Vineyard Haven, Oaks Bluff, Menemsha...

Nantucket really has just the main area of town to explore for what you like to do. It is beautiful and quaint however, but more limited as an island for people wanting to stroll. Now if you want to just see the New England coast, fishing villages and so on, either island offers both.

I think you will find that Nantucket looks a bit more like Charleston (much, much, much smaller of course) so Martha%26#39;s Vineyard might be bit more different for you.

Either way, both are beautiful. As is Charleston...my favorite place in the US...and that%26#39;s coming from a proud New Englander! :)

Both are BEAUTIFUL in September, so you have picked the right time to visit! I would say there%26#39;s more to do/see in Martha%26#39;s Vineyard. They have a great bus system if you%26#39;d like to check out the island, or you can make a day of it in Edgartown. Really can%26#39;t go wrong with either one.

Am planning a three-four night getaway with my Mom. I%26#39;m in my early 50s, she%26#39;s late 70s. Am thinking of Mother%26#39;s Day weekend (May 11) or the next weekend (May 18th.) Am torn between Nantucket and Martha%26#39;s Vineyard. Maybe we should try both?

We appreciate historical architecture, shopping, eating out (but not too expensive), local color, exploring, cultures different from ours. She doesn%26#39;t walk that well anymore so we won%26#39;t cover a whole lot of ground, we certainly won%26#39;t bike, etc. She doesn%26#39;t have a whole lot of stamina; she%26#39;ll go for 3-4 hours, then maybe will want to lay down for a nap before going back out again.

Am wondering if bringing your own car is a bad idea in early May. I%26#39;d certainly love the freedom of being able to sightsee on our own schedule. If we had a car we%26#39;d drive all over the island to see the various communities as we like to explore.

I%26#39;d appreciate any input. Thanks!

Given your Mom%26#39;s age I would take a car to MV and maybe take the ferry on a day trip from MV to Nantucket w/o the car. The ferry in MV is into Oak Bluffs or Vinyard Haven and you would want to drive around from there. The Ferry to Nantucket stops right in the main town of Nantucket that is full of little shops and a whaling mueum. If I am remembering correctly I think the town might be on a hill but if you take is slow shop by shop it might not be too bad. You could hop a cab up to the Museum at the top of the hill and work your way down back to the ferry throughout the day to save her energy.

While in MV just use your car to explore each town.

I found the cost for taking a car and that cured me on that thought! We could rent a car on the island for one day to get out and around.

I%26#39;ve always stuck with Nantucket. I%26#39;ve always heard people who have visited both say stick with Nantucket, but it depends on what you want. Nantucket is probably more quite and upscale. MV probably has more night life.

I%26#39;m glad to hear that as we did decide on Nantucket. I dunno, there was something about the write-ups I read that made it sound a bit more ';special.';

The next trip--with my sister--will be MV as when I told her of our plans she blurted out that MV was one place she had always wanted to go. Maybe next year :)

DEFINITELY Nantucket. It%26#39;s charming, good food, easy ';walking around'; ..looking and of course, lots of ways to enjoy spending money. If you have the bucks, fly over...it%26#39;s a quick (but pricey )flight. You can catch a cab from the airport to town. Otherwise, just do the Ferry and enjoy the boat ride. (and have more money to spend when you get there and you can buy the ';ladies'; a Nantucket basket purse..)

The walking tour is nice..the whaling museum interesting. Interesing Old Churches...Quaker Meeting House.

Don%26#39;t miss the Crantucket Ice Cream at the shop next to Henry%26#39;s at Steam Boat Wharf.

Talking about Nantucket makes me want to catch a flight out of CA and join you. Have fun.

She%26#39;ll enjoy the whole ferry experience as the part of the country she comes from doesn%26#39;t have anything similar. I recently did the Long Island Ferry from CT and the time passes very quickly because it was a new experience.
