We are making what is likely to be our last trip to the Cape as a family at the end of June. My husband, a Cape Cod lover since childhood and fine dining aficianado, has a terminal illness. We are going with our 11 year old daughter, staying 7 nights at our timeshare at the Ocean Club at Smugglers Beach in S. Yarmouth and then 4 nights directly next door in a beachfront room at the Riviera (there is just nothing my hsband loves more than watching Nantucket Sound from a balcony at the Riviera).
I am looking for ideas for something special...
something unique that maybe he hasn%26#39;t done in his over 40 years spending summers at the Cape. I remember once he mentioned an amazing buffet at the Daniel Webster Inn for Thanksgiving, and some other outrageously expensive restaurant (begins with an R?). I%26#39;m wondering if somethng for the day at Chatham Bars Inn or a private boat charter somewhere is available. Any and all ideas will be apprecited, though anything too physically strenuous would not work for us right now. Also, the idea can be something our 11 year old would enjoy, or it can be something for just he and I. It doesn%26#39;t have to be expensive...I remember climbing the Scargo Lake lighthouse with him when we were dating and it was so romantic.
Thanks for puttig you collective Cape Cod wisdom together for a special trip. We wil be there June 28-July 8
A Cape Lover's Final Wish (warning----sad)
I am so sorry you and your family are going through this.
I am sure you%26#39;ll be getting plenty of suggestions about different activities and restaurants. Can you help by letting us know what you, your husband and daughter have enjoyed in the past or what kind of food you all enjoy the most? Anything you could share would help us help you to make some great memories. Again, my sincere condolences.
A Cape Lover's Final Wish (warning----sad)
The Cape is such a great place to spend some precious family time. My best memories of my own father were family vacations together. I wish you and your family were not going through this - my heart goes out to you.
The restaurant that you mention might be the Regatta of Cotuit?
Also, if you don%26#39;t already have it, the Cape Cod Explorer%26#39;s Guide by Kim Grant is an excellent resource for all things on the Cape.
I would highly recommend dinner at the Ocean House in Dennisport. Make reservations in advance, and request a table by the window. You%26#39;ll have a great view and a spectacular -- and memorable -- meal.
Chillingsworth would also be an excellent choice for dinner.
I%26#39;m sure all of you would love ';Merlin and the Cave of Dreams,'; which will be onstage at the Harwich Junior Theatre during your stay on the Cape:
www.hjtcapecod.org
It%26#39;s a wonderful theatre in an historic building in West Harwich.
If your husband is feeling up to a little walk, visit the old fulling mill and herring run in Brewster. It%26#39;s a lovely place, and there%26#39;s a wishing well near the footbridge that crosses the brook.
All good wishes to the three of you...
get a permit and have a bonfire on the beach toast some marshmellows and hot dogs and have dad tell of his times on the cape. your son will love haveing these kinds of memories to remeber when dads gone.
First off, I would just like to say that my heart goes out to all of you....
I read your post this AM, cried , and concluded that I need to come back to it later on...
Hmmm, some suggestions:
Private charter aboard the Catboat

Coast Guard in Eastham and Herring Cove in Provincetown, are handicapped accessible and have wheelchairs capable of traveling over sand.

My thoughts %26amp; prayers are with you...
Naomi :-)
Let me also extend my heartfelt sympathy and also admiration for your desire to continue celebrating your family%26#39;s life. I, too thought of the catboat out of Hyannis for a sail, but what I wanted to suggest was seeing if you could charter it to take you all to Topper%26#39;s restaurant at the Wauwinet resort on Nantucket for lunch or dinner. You can actually ';sail up'; for beachside dining. I just read about it in a travel magazine and it looks fantastic. I also think your daughter might enjoy it as well. Here is the link:

Take care.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, your husband and family.
My husband has been going to Cape Cod since 1963 and me and my son, since 1985 and 1992 (when he was born), respectively.
One thing we%26#39;ve never done that has always held great appeal, was taking a sightseeing tour by air. I am guessing that your husband has not done this in the 40 years he%26#39;s been visiting and it wouldn%26#39;t be taxing physically, since he could just sit back and enjoy the view.
Here are a few places you could look into for tours by air: http://www.insidecapecod.com/main-tours3.htm
Two years ago, hubby, son and I took a seaplane ride out to the Dry Tortugas off of Key West. It was the hightlight of our vacation and something we will never forget.
Hope you will receive many suggestions that will create wonderful memories.
The chef that made the Regatta famous now has her own restuarant in Mashpee called Heather.

I would recommend that. God Bless.

Yes the Regatta is the one he has mentioned! We usually make one trip to the Ocean House each year and certainly will again. I wonder if the Regatta is worth another spurge?
I love the idea of chartering a catboat and of the bonfire permit. I will have to see if they allow that on the beach near our hotel (its the beach that runs from the Red Jacket Resort to the Ocean Club in S. Yarmouth.) Marshmallows, hot dogs, our daughter running circles wth a mouthfull of smores? It all sounds lovely! I%26#39;ll check out the Merlin show too. Not sure about the aerial options---it may be too much overstimulation for him (brain cancer metastisized from melanoma). Keeping it sweet and simple will be the key.
I am thinking of hiring one of those photographers that does family portraits on the beach where you all wear the same color shirts. That could make for special memories. (Plus our duaghter is especially beautiful and photogenic and would LOVe a phto shoot).
Keep these ideas coming and THANK YOU all for your kind thoghts.
Wow I see that Rain---The Beatles Experience will be at the Melody Tent our week. I bet he would love the Beatles thing (Here, There and Everywhere was our wedding song). Melissa Ethridge is also there our week. Have seen her in concert and she is amazing, but for hubby it would have to be the beatles thing.
