Route suggestions to avoid heavy Boston traffic

Looking for 2 routes and will be aiming to avoid rush hours. First is going to Cohasset MA (think about 30 minutes s of Boston on coast) coming down 89 and 93S. Second is going from Cohasset MA to Saco ME (once I get on 95 on east side of Boston area I can find my way to Saco).

Don%26#39;t mind adding a bit of travelling time to avoid heavy congested areas. Wondering if 495 that seems to ring Boston area is a good option?

Route suggestions to avoid heavy Boston traffic

You don%26#39;t say when you%26#39;ll be traveling, and that%26#39;s important if anyone here can offer sound advice.

For instance, you%26#39;ll hit heavy traffic driving to Maine all the way to Saco if you try to drive in the summer on a Friday afternoon/evening, or on a Saturday morning.

Route suggestions to avoid heavy Boston traffic

To get to Cohasset, you can drop off the X way at Quincy Square and get onto Rt 3A. That%26#39;s more direct than taking 3 to Hingham and driving across Hingham to Cohasset. If you want to beat the traffic, do this anytime before 3-4pm and you should be okay. After that time, you get into Rush Hour.

To get to Saco from Cohasset, I%26#39;d follow 3A all the way up to Neponset Circle and jump on the expressway there---but I%26#39;d do that before or well after morning rush hour.

I would NOT take 495. I%26#39;d rather get up before dawn than do all that extra driving. You shoudnl%26#39;t have to get up super early. If you go midday, it shouldn%26#39;t be too bad.

...and yes, the backup to Maine/NH and the Cape is pretty bad on a Friday afternoon in the summer.

Traffic going north is not that big a deal.

It would be easier if you said ';we are thinking about drive from here to there at this time on this date and day of the week'; and we could guess what it would be like.

495 is only rarely bumper-to-bumper (around Lawrence) and then only briefly, but chances are you%26#39;d be better off driving through the city in the non-rush-hour hours.

Will be a Monday to Cohasset and a Tuesday to Saco - likely in Boston area around noon give or take an hour either way. Sounding like advice is no to 495 but not clear to me what thruway #s you are referring to as hopping on and off.

the Central artery/93/the expressway is the thruway I%26#39;m referrring to. Going down, I%26#39;d jump off in Quincy onto Rt 3A for Cohasset and take it back into the city...going north, I%26#39;d go Rt 1 (which can be busy but should be okay midday) but you could also go 93 and get onto 95 farther north at 128/95...

I would not go 495 but 128 is an option, though that can be worse than the xway...

WBZ radio 1030 am has regular traffic reports. you might give a listen .

Thanks - sounds like 3A and 93 are most direct routes (with 1 as an option). Assuming all are well marked and on and off are from the right?

I think you%26#39;ve got it right. During non-rush hour times, Route 93 South right through the city is really the best. You might encounter a little lunchtime heaviness, but not usually a big deal. Route 495 really would add a lot of mileage and time to your trip. Route 128/95 somewhat less, but still out of the way and no more guarantee about traffic levels.

Getting onto 3A might be a little tricky in Quincy but there are signs. You can either pick it up in North Quincy (get off 93S/Xway in Neponset and follow signs for Wollaston Beach/Rt3Asouth) or go to the Braintree Split and get off (I think it%26#39;s exit 7 but check)...first exit off of rt 3 after/at the split...follow signs for Quincy Center/burgin parkway. Go to Quincy Square and cut across to Rt 3A. It might be easier to catch it in North Quincy, cimpler.

I think 1 north is more direct than 93 north but 93 is usually a faster road. If you%26#39;re looking for a place to stop for lunch, 1 is full of restaurants and stores.

Appreciate the detail provided. Feeling a little more confident of taking 93 thru Boston.
