Hey Y%26#39;all,
So many of you have kindly provided me with resources on getting those delicious New England hot dog buns. I was wondering if anyone out there has a recipe for Shepherd%26#39;s Pie similiar to the scrumptious one I ate @ Durgin Park. I would love to make it for my family if anyone can oblige me!
THANKS!!!
Shepherd's Pie?!?!?
Teach,
I don%26#39;t remember what Durgin Park serves for it - maybe I never knew - but the basic recipe you can adapt yoursef. It%26#39;s traditionally a layer of ground beef and a layer of corn, topped with a layer of mashed potatoes. You can improvise from there, but that%26#39;s the basic one.

Shepherd's Pie?!?!?
That%26#39;s how I make it too. I brown the hamburger, put it on the bottom. Make mashed potatoes on the side. Put a layer of corn over the hamburger and then add potatoes to the top. Bake in the oven at 350 until the top gets a little brown.
You know, I haven%26#39;t been to Durgin Park in quite some time but I don%26#39;t recall the Shepherd%26#39;s Pie at all .... I found a Durgin-Park Cookbook on Amazon, published in 2002 --- and I went through the index and found nothing .... here%26#39;s the link in case you are interested.

traditional Shepherd%26#39;s Pie is made with ground lamb - not sure if that is the way DP does it or not. Either way - when you brown the meat, throw some chopped onion in and make sure that you season the meat well (salt, pepper, a dash of Worcestershire, and whatever else you like)
Kendrick is right about the lamb and about the seasoning. Although it%26#39;s usually beef if you have it in a restaurant. In the U.K. the vegetables are more likely to be peas and carrots than corn. I have a friend who puts a layer of baked beans on top of the ground meat, just under the potato. She%26#39;s not from Boston by the way. Another name in the U.K. for a similar dish, which does traditionally use beef, is cottage pie.

Guess I%26#39;m a chowda head. Didn%26#39;t see previous post regarding Durgin Park cookbook.
Maybe you could try here:http://www.recipezaar.com/218024
This isn%26#39;t the specific Durgin Park recipe, but you could ask someone in the Recipe Zaar Community if they have the recipe. You could also write to Gourmet mag and request the recipe or maybe Durgin Park would give it to you.
