Looking for typical New England getaway between Bos and Nyc

Hi

My husband and I plan on travelling to the US from Australia in February. I have spent some time in the New England states in the Fall which are just gorgeous but this trip we are very limited for time and just want approx. 3 nights getaway as typically New England as possible. Was considering The Berkshires (which town/village is the best ie. most quaint and picturesque) or can you suggest something better? Obviously this area will be covered in snow but i assume driving/getting around isnt too much problem - we will have a hire car. We are then headed to Woodbury Common for shopping (any suggestions on best accommodation?) and then onto New York for 3-4 nights. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Cheers from OZ.

You could go to Stockbridge, MA. and may be stay at

the Red Lion Inn? I did mapquest between the Woodbury Commons Premium Outlets in Central Valley, NY and the Red Lion Inn%26#39;s address at 30 Main Street in Stockbridge and it%26#39;s exactly a 2 hour drive away from each other @ 121 miles. SO it would depend on the weather conditions, are you up for it? February can be iffy, we never know what we%26#39;re going to get hit with during that month as far as snow is concerned. I%26#39;ve been to the Berkshires in November a few times, never in February.

This would be a really good stopping point for you along the way I would think. Especially if you%26#39;re heading to NY any way. This Inn is 2 1/2 hours north of NYC %26amp; 2 hours west of Boston, so it would be a good stopping point.

The Red Lion Inn used to be a stage coach stop in 1773 and then it was rebuilt in 1897. It%26#39;s one of the few remaining American Inns in continuous use since the 18th century. They have entertainment in the Lions Den 7 nights a week. The Norman Rockwell Museum is located at 9 Glendale Road on Rte 183, not too far from the Inn at all. There%26#39;s year round theatre %26amp; dance with a few good performing arts centers located in this whole area. The Red Lion Inn has info about them on their site.

Definitely try to go to the Norman Rockwell Museum, it%26#39;s fantastic. I always make it a point to go there whenever we%26#39;re driving through that town:

Have a great time!

The suggestion of Stockbridge is an excellent one that would appear to meet your various needs and wishes.

I would not worry too much about the car and getting around. If it is snowing heavily or is very slippery, you would not want to be driving anyway. Most of the time, the roads won%26#39;t be slippery at all.

The area won%26#39;t necessarily be covered in snow, but could be. If we get a lot of snow, driving WOULD be a problem, especially if you%26#39;re not used to driving in the snow and/or if you don%26#39;t have a car that%26#39;s good in snow. It%26#39;s not an impossible problem. You CAN drive aroud but it%26#39;s not easy or quick and there are often accidents. If it%26#39;s bad snow on a day that you plan to drive, you will need to adjust your expectations regarding how long it will take to get where you%26#39;re going.

Another option could be Newport, Rhode Island. It is a larger town and not as quaint as the Berkshires but there are smaller towns on the way. And it is kind of on the way to NY. Visiting the mansions there is very popular (where the Astors and the Vanderbilts had their summer ';cottages';). They had a Newport Winter Festival in Feb 2008 for about 2 weeks and probably they will have one in 2009 as well. Newport is a summer town but there seems to be lots going in during the festival. Many of the mansions are open in February:

On the way to Rhode Island you will find Wrentham Premium Outlets which are similar to Woodbury Common (just in case):

Have fun!
